Website privacy and self-hosted data responsibilities.
Effective date: July 14, 2026. This Privacy Policy applies to the public Expense Tracker website at
financetracking.app. It does not automatically govern data stored inside self-hosted copies of the app,
because those installations are controlled by the person or team running them.
What this policy covers
This policy covers the public website, including pages such as the homepage, privacy page, and links to
the GitHub repository. It explains what information may be processed when someone visits the site or
contacts Expense Tracker directly.
What this policy does not cover
Expense Tracker is distributed as self-hosted software. If you run your own copy of the app, the
budgeting data, account balances, imported CSV files, and user records inside that installation are
controlled by you or your hosting provider. The operator of that installation is responsible for its own
privacy disclosures, security controls, backups, and retention practices.
What website information may be processed.
Technical website data
When you visit the website, the hosting platform or content delivery network may automatically process
standard request data such as IP address, browser type, device information, referring page, requested
URL, timestamps, and basic diagnostic logs. Google Analytics also processes website usage and
interaction data as described below. This information is used to deliver and improve the site, prevent
abuse, and troubleshoot availability or security issues.
Email or direct contact
If you contact Expense Tracker by email, the message may include your name, email address, and any
other information you choose to include in the message.
No bank syncing on this site
The public website does not provide bank account linking, transaction syncing, or hosted budgeting
accounts.
How information is used
- To serve and secure the website.
- To diagnose technical issues and prevent misuse.
- To understand which public pages and links are useful.
- To respond to direct inquiries or support requests.
- To maintain records related to communications you initiate.
How information is shared
- With infrastructure providers that host or deliver the website.
- With Google as the provider of Google Analytics for website measurement.
- With email providers when you send a message directly.
- When reasonably necessary to comply with law or protect rights and security.
- Not sold for money and not shared for cross-site advertising by default.
Cookies, retention, and security responsibilities.
Cookies and analytics
The public website uses Google Analytics to understand aggregate traffic, referral sources, page views,
and interactions such as navigation. Google Analytics may process identifiers, IP-derived approximate
location, browser and device information, requested pages, referral data, and interaction events under
Google's own terms and privacy practices. This website measurement is separate from self-hosted Expense
Tracker installations and does not read the budget records stored in those installations. Browser privacy
controls, content blockers, or Google's available opt-out controls may limit this measurement.
Retention
Technical logs and email correspondence may be retained only as long as reasonably necessary for
operations, security review, support, recordkeeping, or legal compliance.
Security
Reasonable steps may be taken to protect the website and related communications, but no method of
internet transmission or storage is guaranteed to be completely secure. People who self-host the app are
responsible for securing their own servers, databases, backups, credentials, and application access.
Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access, correction, deletion, or additional
information about personal data processed for the website. To make a request, contact
hello@financetracking.app.
Guidance for self-hosted operators
If you deploy Expense Tracker for yourself, your household, or a team, you should publish your own
privacy notice describing what budgeting data you store, who can access it, where it is hosted, how long
it is kept, and how users can exercise any applicable privacy rights.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated as the website changes. The effective date at the top of this page will be
updated when material revisions are made.
